HVD – Holographic Versatile Disc, is an optical disc technology, developed between april 2004 and mid -2008 that can store up to several terabytes of data, offer far more storage capacity than CDs, DVDs even Blu-ray disc.
HVD offers several advantages over traditional storage technology. HVDs can ultimately store more than 1 terabyte(TB) of information that 200times more than a single-sided DVD and 20times more than a current double-sided Blu-ray. HVD’s transfer rate up to 1GBps that 4 times faster than DVD.
On June 11, 2007 published 200GB “recordable cartridge” and defining a 100GB HVD-ROM disc, its next stated goals are 30GB HVD cards and submission of these standards to International Organization for Standardization for ISO approval.
1 HVD=5800CDs =830DVDs =160 BLU-RAY Discs (Approx).
Holography is a method of recording patterns of light to produce a 3D object. The recorded patterns of light are called a hologram

A simplified HVD system consists of the following main components:
- Blue or green laser (532-nm wavelength in the test system)
- Beam splitter/merger
- Mirrors
- Spatial light modulator (SLM)
- CMOS sensor
- Photopolymer recording medium
